How to Help a Child Who Freezes at Word Problems
Some children can calculate 28 + 17 on a bare page, then appear to forget addition when those numbers belong to bus passengers or apples. The pencil stops. The child rereads the first sentence three times and says, “I don’t get it.” This is not necessarily a math gap. A word problem asks for reading, holding details in memory, imagining a situation and selecting an operation before calculation even begins.
We saw this clearly in a problem about 24 library books, 9 being borrowed and the remainder staying on a cart. The child had completed a whole row of subtraction directly above it. Asked what was happening in the story—without any numbers—they immediately said, “Some books leave.” The arithmetic was available; the story had hidden the doorway.
Lower the pressure of the first move
Do not begin with “Which operation is it?” That question asks for the final decision before the situation is clear. Ask the child to tell the story back in their own words. If that is too much, offer a smaller prompt: “What do we know at the start?” or “What changes?” Let them point, gesture or act it out with objects.
Cover the question at the end and read only the situation. Ask the child to draw a quick sketch—not an illustration contest, just boxes, dots or lines. Then reveal the question and circle what needs to be found. This separates understanding the scene from hunting for an answer.
Reading aloud is a valid support. It does not make the mathematics easier; it removes decoding as a competing task. If the child understands when listening but not when reading independently, you have learned something specific. Continue the math work aloud while treating reading as its own skill rather than forcing both difficulties into one unhappy session.
Be cautious with keyword rules
Advice such as “altogether means add” feels helpful because it gets the pencil moving. Unfortunately, words are unreliable. “Mina has 12 stickers altogether and gives away 4” requires subtraction despite the famous keyword. Children who scan for code words may calculate without understanding the event.
Use relationship questions instead. Is the amount growing, shrinking, being compared or split into equal groups? What would the answer describe? Should it be larger or smaller than the starting number? These questions create a model that transfers to unfamiliar wording.
The word-problem worksheets include drawing spaces and solution frames, but you can add the same structure to any problem with a scrap page divided into three rough areas: what is happening, the math sentence, and the answer in words. Keep the frame flexible. Not every child needs to fill every box forever.
Help without taking over
Give one hint at a time and wait. Adults often ask a question, receive two seconds of silence, then ask three more and begin solving aloud. The child ends up trying to follow the adult rather than the problem. Ten quiet seconds can feel absurdly long across a table, but it gives working memory a chance to catch up.
If the learner remains stuck, model a parallel problem with smaller numbers. For “There are 36 shells and 19 are removed,” demonstrate 6 counters with 2 removed. Ask what changed and write 6 − 2. Then return to the original. This preserves the child’s opportunity to make the actual decision.
Once an answer is found, ask whether it fits the story. A child who calculates 24 − 9 as 33 may notice that more books cannot remain after some leave. Estimation and common sense catch errors that formal checking misses. End after one or two successful problems. A freeze is not cured by assigning a dozen stories in one sitting. The aim is to build a repeatable opening: tell what happens, sketch it, name what is unknown, then choose the math. When a child knows how to make that first small move, the page stops looking like a wall of words and starts behaving like a problem that can be entered.
