Why Multiplication Speed Drills Should Come After Understanding
Multiplication facts should eventually become easy to retrieve. When 6 × 4 is available without a long calculation, the child has more attention for fractions, area and multi-digit work. The disagreement is not really about whether fluency matters. It is about what should happen before a stopwatch enters the room.
On one timed sheet we reviewed, a child wrote 42 for nearly every fact involving 6 or 7. The strategy was not mysterious: 42 felt like a “multiplication sort of number,” and guessing preserved the pace. When the timer disappeared and 6 × 7 was built as six rows of seven counters, the child counted 42 and could explain it. Speed had hidden partial understanding, then punished the learner for not retrieving it instantly.
Facts need something to attach to
Before memorizing 3 × 5, a child should encounter three groups of five, five groups of three, and a rectangular array. They should connect the notation to repeated addition and skip counting without being told that multiplication is only “fast adding.” These representations give the fact meaning and provide a route back when memory fails.
Arrays are especially generous. A 4-by-6 rectangle shows why 4 × 6 and 6 × 4 share an answer. Split it into two 2-by-6 rectangles and it shows a doubling strategy. Add one row to a known 5 × 6 array and 6 × 6 becomes 30 + 6. A bare flash card displays none of this, though it becomes useful after the relationships are familiar.
We mildly object to treating every fact as an isolated item. There are 144 boxes on a 1–12 table, but children need not store 144 unrelated noises. Ones, tens and fives offer patterns. Twos connect to doubling. Nines can be reasoned from tens. Commutative pairs reduce the load. The multiplication chart set can be used to color these patterns rather than merely hang them on a wall.
What early timing can distort
A clock changes the task. Some children become energized and focused; others lose access to facts they knew a minute earlier. Fast handwriting starts to count as mathematical skill. Careful strategy users may abandon good methods for guesses. A low score can mean weak recall, slow writing, anxiety, distraction or unfamiliarity with the page layout.
Repeated drills can also improve a narrow performance without improving multiplication. A child may memorize the order of one sheet or learn to scan ahead for easy facts. Mix the order, ask the same fact in a word problem, or request a drawing and the apparent mastery vanishes. That does not make drills useless; it means the score needs modest interpretation.
Signs that timing may now help
Consider brief speed practice when the child can model multiplication, explain the relationship between related facts, and derive an unknown fact from a known one. If asked 7 × 8, the learner might recall it directly or say, “I know 7 × 4 is 28, so double that.” A strategy that takes a few seconds is not failure. It is the bridge from understanding to recall.
Start with one familiar fact family for two or three minutes. Let the child record their own baseline and compete with their previous result, not another child. Count accurate responses rather than completed boxes. Afterwards, revisit one hesitation with an array or relationship. Stop if timing causes wild guessing, tears or a sudden collapse in facts that were secure without pressure. That reaction is data. Return to untimed games, oral patterns or small groups of related facts. Fluency grows through frequent retrieval, but retrieval practice does not require visible seconds ticking down.
The eventual goal is flexible efficiency: quick recall when it is available and a dependable strategy when it is not. Understanding and speed are not enemies. They simply work best in order. Build the meaning, notice the patterns, practice recalling them, and only then use the clock as a small measuring tool—not as the main event.
