Is Your Child Ready for Double-Digit Addition?

A child can answer 8 + 7 quickly and still be unready for 28 + 17. That is not a contradiction. Double-digit addition asks the learner to keep track of ones and tens, choose a method, and sometimes rename ten ones as one ten. The size of the numbers is only the most visible change.

We once looked over a page where every single-digit fact was correct, then found 31 + 6 answered as 91. The child had added 3 + 6 and placed the 1 back at the end. More fact cards would not have fixed that. The missing idea was positional: the 3 in 31 means three tens, not three loose units.

Start with what the digits mean

Before introducing a column method, write a number such as 42 and ask the child to show it in two ways. They might draw four bundles of ten and two dots, build it with coins or counters, or say “40 and 2.” Then ask what would happen if seven more ones arrived. A learner who can preserve the four tens while adding the ones has a useful foundation.

Try a boundary question next: 38 + 2. Does the child know the result is 40, and can they explain why? The explanation may be informal—“the two fills up the eight”—but it should connect the ones to a new ten. Look for strategies, not a performance

Readiness does not mean instant mental answers. In fact, a child who draws a number line or splits 26 + 13 into 20 + 10 and 6 + 3 is showing more useful understanding than one who guesses rapidly. Ask for two untimed examples: one without regrouping, such as 23 + 14, and one that crosses a ten, such as 27 + 8.

Watch what happens when the second problem gets awkward. Does the child count every mark from one, lose track and restart? Or do they notice that 27 needs 3 to reach 30, leaving 5 to add? Counting on fingers is not disqualifying. The better question is whether the child can organize the count and explain where the parts went.

Single-digit facts need not be flawless either. Reasonable fluency means familiar facts do not consume all the learner’s attention. If working out 4 + 3 takes so much effort that the tens are forgotten, spend a little longer on small-number relationships. If the child uses a reliable strategy and returns to the larger problem, move on.

Introduce the easier version first

Begin double-digit work without regrouping. A few problems such as 21 + 16 let the child practice keeping tens and ones aligned without carrying an extra step. Horizontal equations are useful before columns because they invite decomposition: 20 + 10, then 1 + 6. After that makes sense, show how the same thinking appears vertically.

The addition and subtraction worksheets move from smaller facts toward double-digit work, but do not feel obliged to follow every page in order. Choose three or four questions, ask the child to explain one, and stop while the method is still clear. A full page can make an emerging skill look shakier simply through fatigue.

Signs to pause for now

Pause if place-value language seems meaningless, if digits are regularly reversed within the number, or if the child treats 35 as separate 3 and 5 counters. Those observations suggest a different next activity, not a verdict on ability. Build numbers, compare 29 and 92, find numbers on a hundred chart, and trade ten individual objects for one bundle.

Readiness is also allowed to vary by day. A child may understand the idea in a calm conversation and lose it on a crowded worksheet after school. Use several small observations instead of one test. When the learner can describe tens and ones, manage a simple two-step strategy, and recover from a small mistake, double-digit addition is a sensible next challenge. Perfect speed can wait.
